Pecel Madiun is one of the most popular dishes from East Java, Indonesia. The dish is a combination of vegetables and peanut sauce, served with rice cakes or steamed rice. For the peanut sauce: – 200 grams of roasted peanuts – 5 cloves of garlic – 5 red chili peppers – 3 bird’s eye chili peppers – 2 tablespoons of tamarind paste – 1 tablespoon of palm sugar – 1 teaspoon of salt – 250 ml of water For the vegetables: – 300 grams of bean sprouts – 300 grams of spinach – 300 grams of water spinach – 1 cucumber, sliced – 2 tomatoes, sliced – 2 boiled eggs, sliced For the rice cakes: – 500 grams of rice flour – 750 ml of boiling water – 1 teaspoon of salt
Making the peanut sauce:
1. Grind the roasted peanuts until they become a fine powder. 2. Blend the garlic, red chili peppers, bird’s eye chili peppers, tamarind paste, palm sugar, and salt until they become a smooth paste. 3. Heat the water in a saucepan and add the chili paste. Stir until it boils. 4. Add the ground peanuts and stir until the sauce becomes thick.
Making the vegetables:
1. Boil the bean sprouts, spinach, and water spinach for 2-3 minutes. Drain and set aside. 2. Arrange the cucumber, tomatoes, boiled eggs, and boiled vegetables on a plate.
Making the rice cakes:
1. Mix the rice flour, boiling water, and salt in a bowl. Stir until it becomes a smooth dough. 2. Take a small piece of dough and form it into a ball. Flatten it into a round shape, about 1 cm thick. 3. Steam the rice cakes for 10-15 minutes until they are cooked.
Pecel Madiun is a healthy dish because it contains a lot of vegetables, which are a good source of vitamins and minerals. The peanut sauce also provides protein and healthy fats from the peanuts. However, the dish is quite high in carbohydrates because of the rice cakes. One serving of Pecel Madiun contains approximately 500-600 calories, depending on the amount of peanut sauce and rice cakes consumed.
